This is from the second issue of DWM I ever had. I still remember the excitement of realising whoever was writing the Dr Who comic was as Dr Who literate as I was. From my viewpoint now, I'm slightly surprised that I recognised that as a potential image of Zoe and wonder where I had seen Zoe's similar outfit before, or was it just the hair?

I can't remember if you were involved in the discussion in another place about whether this was Zoe, not Zoe, why Dave Gibbons drew her as Zoe, did Steve Parkhouse specify a Zoe-alike, was the proximity of the repeat of The Krotons a factor, etc, etc.

I definitely wasn't a part of that discussion. I think it meant to be a facsimile of Zoe, though the reasoning why is less obvious.

Much as I love Parkhouse's time on the strip, I've never really understood the point of that sequence!

Thinking about it, he may have had help (J. Jeremy Bentham?). I think I read somewhere that Parkhouse wasn't particularly au fait with the series when he started, and didn't even own a TV. I think part of the appeal of his stories is that they are quintessentially Doctor Who, even though most of them feel nothing like the programme as seen on TV. It's like someone explained the basic premise to him, and then he just extrapolated the rest on his own.

I really, really want to write more, and seriously, about the DWM comic, which I adore. Maybe one day I'll get around to it.

You are right about them feeling like Doctor Who while being very different from actual Doctor Who - though, of course, at this distance they are so much a part of my fannish experience its hard to distinguish. I think as a child I was much more accepting that anything that said Doctor Who on the tin was Doctor Who (see annuals).
