Red brick walls with a red brick gateway with battlements. A cobbled walkway with a modern looks leads up to it.

A bridge leading to a red brick gateway with battlements and asymetrically placed windows.
Carlisle Castle is an odd mix of the old and new, having until recently been an active military barracks. The keep was under renovation when we visited and though you could go inside the keep itself (not shown) was wrapped in plastic sheeting.

A stone room with a wooden floor. In front of a green curtain that dominates one wall is a long wooden table. Two benches are this side of the table and two carved wooden chairs the other.
As far as we could tell these rooms had been in use by the officers and then subsequently dressed for tourist visitors. The information suggested that these were Richard III's rooms when he was Governor of the castle and Warden of the Western March.

A stone room with a wooden floor. Wooden eaves look new. A small bench and table stand at the far side, next to a glass paned window.
Another view of the Warden's appartments.

Long rectangular brick buildings with rows of sash windows. An impressive array of white vans is parked in front of them.
The barracks themselves are within the castle walls. It was clear that discussions were currently underway about what use these buildings would eventually be put to.

A glass pane through which can be seen carved bricks.
The only bit of the castle protected from curious visitors was this wall of graffiti attributed to artistically talented but bored prison guards in the 15th century.

A row of canons on a neat stone-flagged walkway.
Obviously no castle would be complete without canon.
